The UNIDO recognising the outstanding performance of SIET under the scheme of Centers of Excellence, for its meritorious performance accorded the national status and renamed as National Institute for Small Industries Extension and Training (nisiet) in 1984. The Institute has earned distinction in entrepreneurship promotion, with recognition at national and international levels. With the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Act of 2006 (MSME-D) the Institute was renamed as National Institute for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (ni-msme) with re-designed innovative focus of inclusive growth under the Ministry of MSME.
