Mahatma Gandhi said, "It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver."

The life of an entrepreneur or a business owner as we know is super busy. In the midst of working towards your goals and making a huge impact in the lives of numerous people around you, somewhere your health might get compromised.  But to be able to shoulder all your responsibilities, you need to be healthy.

Here are some easy health care hacks for busy entrepreneurs which we often tend to ignore.

1. Drink plenty of water

You are not stranded in an island surrounded with sea water! (Although, that wouldn’t be a bad idea either, especially when you want to get far away from the humdrum of the city life *winks*) So drink up plenty of water in a day. It is highly possible that you may lose track of the amount you are drinking while you are engrossed in work, however, it is imperative that you drink enough to keep yourself hydrated.

A report on Dietary Reference Intakes: Water, Potassium, Sodium, Chloride, and Sulfate  by The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine determined that the recommended amount of water consumption for women per day is approximately 2.7 liters (91 ounces) of total water -- from all beverages and foods -- each day, and men an average of approximately 3.7 liters (125 ounces daily) of total water. Now that you know the stats, get set; start drinking that holy fluid to keep all your health problems at bay.

2. A healthy outside starts from eating right

One can’t stress enough about eating right. Running from one meeting to the next and completing deadlines, we often lean on quick fixes to fill our tummies. Though these foods may satiate your cravings, it will do very little to release the healthy ions in your body and when that doesn’t happen, you tend to become sluggish and unmindful. Regularly consuming food that is unhealthy can lead to long term health problems like diabetes, obesity, hypertension etc. Remember that moderation is the key. You can indulge in occasional junk foods but exercising self-control is important. And if you want to avoid junk food completely and yet want to eat something similar, there are plenty of healthier alternatives you can munch on. Also remember, whenever you are eating, eat mindfully. Be aware of what you are eating and how your body is reacting to it.

3. How much coffee is too much coffee?

For many of us, starting the day seems impossible without a hot cup of coffee. Although coffee does give you the kick to shake off dreariness and start the day with full energy and rigor, consuming too much coffee can also cause adverse side effects. According to WebMD, consuming more than 6 cups a day might lead to "caffeinism" that can cause anxiety and agitation. Drinking copious amounts of coffee can also lead to insomnia, nausea, restlessness and nervousness.

Try curbing your coffee consumption and try avoiding the use of sugar or cream in your coffee. Switch to healthier alternatives like fruit juices and green tea which keep you healthy from inside.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine determined that the recommended amount of water consumption for women per day is approximately 2.7 liters and men an average of approximately 3.7 liters.

4. Sit straight; never slouch

Almost everyone today is a victim of a sedentary lifestyle that they have willingly or unwillingly adopted. It is easy to ignore the right posture when you are attentively working on something and it is true that maintaining the right posture takes sincere efforts, hence remind yourself time and again to sit upright and practice fitness at you desk.

Practice basic sitting posture when you are at your desk:

  • Adjust your chair to a height so that you are able to comfortably place your feet on the ground and your knees are aligned with your hips.
  • Your system/monitor should be placed a few inches above your eye-level. This is to ensure that your neck isn’t under constant stress from looking at the screen.
  • Make sure that the keyboard is close to you and your hands are resting on the chair handles at 90 degrees while you are typing.
  • Sit 20 inches away from the screen.

5. Take a break every now and then

Sitting for long hours at your desk is a habit that can have serious implications on your health in the long run. Inculcate the habit of taking a five minute break after every one hour of working. Getting up and going for a walk can refresh you up and make you mentally stronger and more active.

6. Sleep is the best medication

This line was said by Dalai Lama and look how happy and healthy the old man looks! Your body is just like your car engine, it needs to be recharged from time to time. The best way to do it is to get ample sleep. Sleeping well restores your energy and helps you get through the day with full agility.

7. Good things come to those who sweat

And a good health comes to people who work out. Exercising even for 20-30 minutes a day can have miraculous effects on your body and mind. Exercising releases endorphins which are your ‘happy hormones’. And exercising can be in any form. Whether you are enjoying your dance, going to the gym or practicing yoga at home, working out in any form you like can be hugely rewarding.

Hope these simple but important points help you remind yourself every day that your health is the most valuable thing in the world.
